After bypass when will i become free from discomfort, chestpain and uneasiness? 1or2 or 3 or 6or12 months? |
had a quadruple CABG four months ago and am still experiencing considerable discomfort across my chest (a heavy dragging sensation) - not up and down the site of the incision, which has healed completely. I have been told by a doctor that it can take up to 12 months for the post-operative discomfort to disappear completely, but other patients I have spoken to said they were pain-free after a matter of weeks.what is true? Dear Milind, My own experience I really didnt feel myself for about a year,it took that long to get over the twinges, pulling tight skin sensations, i also developed shoulder problem. Every patient is different and experience things differently, so it is not a matter of what is true, but what is true for you. I did not have a CABG but I did have a Mitral Valve Replacement in 2003. I was only 37 at the time. I have the same incision as you, all the way down the sternum was broken open, my mitral valve was removed, and a mechanical valve put in its place so I know what you mean about the pain. Actually I was soooooo sore that it hurt, not really pain for me but just an describable sorness that you can't imagine unless you go through it. I did not take pain meds but for a couple of weeks after the surgery, but I was sore and not able to lay flat down for 3 months, had to sleep sitting up as I am sure you are aware. I had more problems with mental issues of the surgery, being scared, anxious, crying often, feeling like I would never feel good again etc. But as time passed it all got better. I would say it took me a good 8-12 months to totally feel like myself again (I experienced a lot of fatigue also). If you are having these kind of worries though, maybe you should talk with your doctor or surgeon again and tell him that this is really concerning you. I know right now it seems as though you will never be yourself again, but you will, it just takes time. These are my own personal experiences. I hope you feel better soon and I empathize with you. |
