Retained placenta - procedure after c-section? Midwife/Dr help required?

11 weeks after the birth of my twins I have just been told I have retained products of conception. I'm a little surprised that it has taken this long to discover this especially as the sonographer told me to go straight to my doctor on Monday morning and so is obviously of some importance.

I had my first twin vaginally and then suffered a placental abruption (the notes describe it as 'ragged') I then had a c-section for twin two as I lost 2 litres of blood and they found a blood clot. Should they not have done an ultra sound at the time to look for retained products? Why wait? I bled for the first 7/8 weeks after delivery. stopped for about 7 days and then bled again for 12 days. The bleeding stopped on Monday. I was examined by my GP at about week 7 who took a swab, found an infection and prescribed antibiotics.

Have I been treated correctly/promptly? Your help/advice/opinions would be really welcome.
Thanks x

No - I have to see my GP on Monday to sort out a date etc.
But what I don't get was that they knew my placenta had broken up inside and that there was a risk of retained pieces - do they still not do an ultrasound? (Thanks!)

It's not generally standard procedure to do an ultrasound after birth to check for retained placenta. That would be something they figure out has happend after symptoms arise and they rule other things out. Have the scheduled you for a D&C to get the rest out? Hope this helps!

I think you weren't treated correctly. Please check out the link, it will help you understand your condition and what to do next. best wishes.

Quite common after a placental abruption and or ragged placenta to have retained products of conception. I would be very surprised if they had not been flushed away by now. The GP will probably do and ultrasound and another swab. Don't worry if the sonographer had been at all worried she would have told you to seek medical advice immediately and not wait until Monday. Also not uncommon to bleed for as long after a birth you will probably find that your period will be back to normal after 3 months from the birth
