How long has Gastric Bypass Surgery been around?

Could anyone give me an estimated cost of this surgery?

Help would be appreciated. Got a loved one considering it and just trying to learn as much as possible about it

hi! My mother had it done over 20 yrs ago. I had it done 5 yrs ago. The cost of the surgery depends on the health of the person who's having it. For me, insurance paid the bulk of the bill, i paid $600 out of pocket. The total cost of the surgery was $25k, less than me having a daughter (2 yrs later) and less than my complications of being severly anemic... and all the testing that goes with it.

The BIGGEST thing you can do for your friend/loved one is:
Support them! Be Proud! Brag!
Remind them to take their vitamins even after they've lost their weight
Exercise with them
Expect emotional changes with them and do your best to work with them through those emotions... for me, 5 yrs post op, i'm just now getting used to looking in the mirror and seeing an average woman.

It's been around for more than ten years now. I would imagine it is still very expensive and has many health risks. Have you looked into the lap-band surgery? It is very similar although reversible and less dangerous.

The GBS has been around for half a century but for a long time, was seldom done.

The cost of the GBS is between $17,000 & $20,000, according to where the surgery is performed.

Two other procedures should be an option. They are the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery & the Lap Band Surgery. From what I have read, the Mini Gastric Bypass surgery was done many times, to correct Lap Band surgeries that were not successful. There are risks with all three of these surgeries. Your loved one needs to educate themselves well, before making a decision.
