About gastric bypass surgery.? |
My sister had gastric bypass about 3 years ago, she lost about 150 lbs, and really had no bad side effects from it. Now I saw her sunday after not seeing her in about a year, and she has gained a substantial amount of the weight back, I am guessing about 75lbs. Of course I didn't come right out and ask how much. My question is a-how is that possible, maybe I don't understand the concept behind the surgery, but I don't see how it is possible to gain that much back. and B-could it lead to more health complications for her. it's possible because operations like gastric bypass don't solve the underlying problems for people that don't exercise and/or consume far too much of the wrong types of foods. you don't get fat eating chicken breasts, fish and veggies. She regained because she did not learn to eat in a healthy way. She still overeats and she probably does not exercise. Most people do regain some weight (10%) but not 50% of what they lost. You need to get on her about this because this is very possible for a Gbypass patient. Just tell her she is gaining and I am sure she'll freak out and maybe be a little more dillegent with the post-op diet. a: yes you can restreach out the pouch and it does happen with some determined to be heavy patients. b: yes the stomach could tear or even worse she could end up being obese again which is the #2 risk of all diseases behind smoking... make sure to start planning a family intervention on this to save her life. Good luck. Yes, people can gain weight back. |
