Does gastric bypass surgery help liver disease?

Hi, I am a surgeon and I will be operating on a patient tomorrow who has liver disease. Can anyone tell me whether or not gastric bypass surgery would actually help the disease? If not, which disease should I perform? Thanks.

I have a hard time believing you are really a surgeon and don't know the answer to this question. Part of the reason is that a surgeon would not say "liver disease", as it is too vague. But let me answer your question anyway.

First, most liver disease, like cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, cancer, sclerosis cholangitis would not be affected by weight loss surgery. Clearly some of these conditions would be a contraindication to weight loss surgery.

Second in the case of Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), it is the treatment of choice if other weight-loss methods don't work.
