I had gastric bypass surgery in April 2005. I started out at 268, now I鈥檓 180 and holding, after 1 year and 7 months. These links will help you in many ways to make a decision if this is for you or not. I vote yes, because it made such a difference in my life. I was taking 8 pills a day, and after my surgery, I lost my diabetes. The way they do the surgery, takes your diabetes away. I no longer have to take glucophage, and I no longer have high Cholesterol or high blood pressure. I鈥檓 down to 2 pills a day. I went from a size 26-28 to a 16-18.

Good luck with your surgery and new life!

I know that Tennecare, Tennessee's crappy medicaid system that pays for nothing, will cover gastric bypass if an individual has at least three (if I remember correctly) chronic diseases related to the obesity, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, history of TIAs, etc. I would certainly check with prospective insurers. More are covering the procedure, because it is cost-effective as a preventive measure against heart attack, stroke, diabetes, etc.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

Not sure where you are, but 3 years post-op here for Laproscopic. Had Unicare HMO at the time. I wasn't very fond of them and the requirements on other health issues (i.e. have to go to their "assigned" clinics, but when it came time for surgery I was sent to the best most experienced hospital in Chicago and treated with more compassion than I can ever have asked for from both the insurance company and the hospital staff. I was approved within 2 weeks and only had to pay the deductible for hospital stay. My suggestion would be to find a doctor that is well versed in the procedure and the staff will know how do deal with the paperwork.
