Bursitis or "Housemaids Knee"?

I fell down hard on both knees on a slope about a year ago. At the time by right knee swelled up and was extremely painful and I had to have the fluid drained. A year later it is still more swollen than the other knee and if I kneel even for a short time ie bathing the dog it hurts. Will I have to have an op on it?

Please see the webpages for more details on Bursitis.

see you doctor a course of antibiotics or anti inflamitaries may clear it up or you might need dreaded injections

Yes, you should go the whole antibiotics, maybe even another draining, route. But if this still doesn't clear up the pain you may need an operation to remove any spurs that might have been caused by your injury. (A spur is a bone chip or growth of bone that interferes with full use of a joint.) The operation is minimal and should require no more than a day or two to recover.

My neighbour, who like most newly 40 year old men, can not admit that he is growing old, plays hockey in a fun league in winter and does the whole golf, baseball, football thing the rest of the year. He ended up injuring his knee, and finally had this done after a year of decreased mobility. Now he claims to be "good to go" for the next 20 years.
