What are bunions and / or hammer toes and how are they formed?

Bunions and hammer toes are formed primarily by bad foot wear.

Ladies tend to wear tight shoes, high heels, funky good looking shoes, which all put too much stress on the foot. As a result, the anatomy of the foot has to change to accomodate the abnormal shoewear.

Bunion is basically an increase of the angle between the tarsal bone (end of your foot) and metatarsal bone (first/closest part of your large toe). As a result, the increased angle cause the bone to become more prominent. As the prominent part of the bone rubs on a tight toe, bunion becomes bothersome to people. It is fixed by having the surgeon cut away the bony part that protrudes out.

Hammer toes develop from abnormal contracture of the same bones, but instead on the side way, it changes up and down, causing the toe to curl up and appears like a hammer. They are corrected, among other way, by wiring the toe straight.

Lose high heels and funky shoes. Wear flat and comfortable shoes.
