Has anyone ever bought a brace that corrects bunions?

I saw it advertised in a podiatric supply catalogue. There are contraptions you wear at night or some you can wear in a shoe. It holds the toe in a straight position. does it actually correct the bunion?

Ooh! Interesting! Dunno, but will watch this space for answers!

I've never heard nor seen such a device. You need to know what a bunion is: It's an abnormal, medial (on the side) enlargement of the joint at the base of the great toe. It's caused by inflammation of the bursa, a fibrous sac between tendons and bone, usually as a result of heredity, degenerative joint disease or chronic irritation and pressure from poorly fitted shoes. It's bone. No brace will "correct" (remove) this bony growth. Such a device may possibly be of help in preventing a bunion but well-fitted shoes will be more effective. Bunionectomy can be performed but bunions can recur for the same reasons they developed in the first place.

It will make the foot more comfortable but I doubt it will correct a bunion. If that was the case the orthopaedic surgeons will be out of a job.

I have had 1 bunion operated on & I have to say that a year later, I'm still not benefitting from it. I can't see me having the other foot done.

It took months to get over the op - 2 weeks spent with the foot above the heart, then 5 weeks on crutches. They break the big toe & insert two screws to keep it in it's new place. The scar is a bit on the ugly side too. It was a good job that the strap on my flip flop hid it this summer. :-)

Hello Nature,

I think you should go and see a podiatrist or an orthatist to help. If you're in England you should be able to go to your doctor and get a referral. I know sometimes they will help with insoles or braces to stop it from getting any worse. I think you're doing the right thing by trying to get it sorted out now.

Praps i will pluck em and then i can wear flip flops!!!

ouch!!!
My mom had one and it did work but the problem is that even though it corrects the bunion, it does not correct Whit caused the bunion in the first place. Some bunions are hereditary and no matter how well fitted your shoes, you will still get a bunion....This happened with my niece and nephew. My niece had a bunionectomy when she was in her 20's. She was born with flat feet and that may be what caused her bunions. The doctor told her it was hereditary

Hi if you are in alot off pain get referred by your GP to the orthopaedic team in your local hospital, you will be seen by the consultant and he will decide from there what best treatment there is .Usually for Bunions when you are in alot off pain there is an operation which corrects the bunion, the bunion is taken off and then a plaster cast is applied for about 6-8wks,i have seen this procedure many times and it works vry well but you will be in pain and discomfort for a while. The bunion strap which you are mentioning about doesnt cure the problem thou, surgery will do this.If you see you gp and get him to refer you to the Appliance Dept in your local hospital they will have all these products there, but you may have to pay thou.Good Luck

i have bunions and sometimes they are painfull i should have got them sorted years ago but i was scared i know someone whos had them removed and years later they are back.they are hereditry.if the contraption works tell me i will try it too.
