How does bunion surgery affect my dancing?

I am currently taking ballet, but every time I take a pointe class, my bunion ends up hurting, and sometimes swells up. I have had my bunions since I was born, and they do not seem to have gotten worse because of my pointe shoes. I am considering surgery. Could someone give me the details for bunion surgery? And if I do have bunion surgery, will I be able to dance on pointe (as well)?

And also--how long would it take for me to get back to dancing on pointe? How long would it take for me to get back to dancing as a whole (not on pointe)?

Well, depending on how bad your bunion is depends on what procedure is needed. Basically, the first metatarsal has to be cut and moved over into a corrected position. Screws are then used to hold the bone in place.
Dancing on pointe is really bad for your feet. I dont let my patients go back on pointe for at least six months. But most do it within three months against my advice.

Hope this helps.

YOU BEST HANG IT UP

I had it done on one foot. My big toe will no longer bend back, as in toe to heal. It bends fine forward, when I go on my tip toes. The surgery itself was very easy. I didn't even need to take any pain medication afterwards. The scar is barely noticable. Although, now when I swim I always get horrible cramps just on that one foot. So I have to take a ton of potassium. You might have some problems dancing, initially. But the doctor will give you exercises to do to make sure it heals right.

bunion surgery is supposed to get rid of the bunion by straightening out your toe. It is supposed to have good results for athletes.
I have a bunion on my big toe that used to hurt and swell up all the time. I started wearing wider shoes and now it doesnt hurt anymore. The doctor said I dont need surgery for it anymore.
Ballet puts alot of stress on the bunion so you might have to get surgery if you want to stay in ballet.
