Can bulimia cause a missed period?

i have bulimia and have had it for a few months now but this is the 1st month i miss my period.. could bulimia be to blame?

im not skinny either.. i know alot of people think that maybe thats why i havent gotten my period because im thin or what not, im not im big. just a little extra info.

First off let me start by saying I'm sure you don't want to hear the lecture about needing to go to a counselor and get mental help blah blah blah. I got an "A"....96 % in psychiatric nursing so I completely understand what you are going through, well not completely because I'm not in your shoes, but have some understanding of it. Being that you are not asking advice on how to stop being bulemic or how to get help, we will skip that part of the lecture....I'm sure you know as well as others that it's not good for you, but what others don't understand is that it is not so easy to stop, even though you are aware of the consequences. But to get to what you are asking, yes having bulimia can cause you to skip a period. It might have taken your body awhile to catch up to the illness to realize that something is just not quite right. Having anorexia or bulimia can cause missed or irregular periods. Yes they say that underweight women can miss periods and all of that stuff, but overweight and normal weight women can as well. Also, assuming that you are suffering from this disease, you are probably under a lot of stress as well and that could cause your period to be missed. Having any illnesses (such as what you have) can cause you to miss your period or be late. If you are certain that you are not pregnant, I'd leave it to the bulimia that's causing the missed periods. However, if your periods continue to act funny in the next few months then I'd go to your doctor and make sure nothing else physically is going on. As for the bulimia, I'm sure you know what to do if you decide to get help. Hope this helps and keep in mind, any serious changes in your body can cause delays or missed periods. Excessive amounts of stress, CHANGE IN DIET, ILLNESS, all of these things--because they effect the cortisol hormone and all the other hormones in our body. If our hormones are messed up and not working how they are used to, then your period becomes irregular....it's very common to happen. Take care of yourself hun and I hope this helps you!

Yes - get help

it could be but if your a teenager then that's the more likely cause. if your worried go to the doc.

i dunno if bulimia can cause it. I know having sex can cause it though.
p.s. bulimia is a mental disorder and you should stop. soon all the stomach acid from throwing up will rot out all your teeth.

Yes.
You should not be bullimic. Try going to a counselor. Bullemics usually have liver problems, stomach problems and many others. You are not healthy.

the real problem here is that your bulemic....honey you need help please get some. plus your teeth will rot

having bulimia has several results. one of them is missing your period. is can also destroy your vocal chords and the lining of you throat. best i can suggest, talk to someone you trust. your best choice mom, sister, aunt, not bff. friends tell ya what ya wanna here not always the truth. ps. ya might be pregnant if you are sexually active. i hope not. if u arent havin sex, sorry.

yes. you're depriving your body of nutrients it needs to be healthy. anemia caused by bulimia is not uncommon. please get help...it's your life you are playing with.

omfg.. i am sick of ppl postin crap bout anorexic and bulimic... if u were REALLY one u wouldnt tell anyone bc it is something u hide and its ur own world!!!!!!! GOD! what is it a new trend lets pretend to be.... bc ana and mia r desies that r mental and cant be controlled..... plz god help these people!!!

I had bulimia for 4 years and have been in recovery for 18 months (woohoo). Yes bulimia could be to blame, and probly is. You are doing soo much damage to your body. I didn't realize the health problems involved until it was too late, I had to take medicine just to swallow food because I was diagnosed with gastro-esaphagul disease which is a fancy wait to say the stomache acid ate the bottom of my throat so now when anythign touches it it hurts really bad. I have holes in my stomach lining (again from the acid) my hair fell out, my finger nails don't grow very good and they are very brittle (this is getting better now), really dry skin, and, lastly I was on medication forever jsut to be able to have a bowel movement. I am only 22 years old by the way. Read some information on bulimia, learn about it before continuing. If you have a hard time stopping (which most do) get some help asap. The doctors told me there was a chance I would ahve problems getting pregnant now, and now that I'm married I'm a little worried. We want a lot of kids, and I'm scared that I may have ruined that.
