Braces. Can bruxism weaken or break brackets?

Every so often, my daughter breaks a bracket, and the orthodontist's office is getting quite nasty about it. Each broken bracket costs $45. I don't mind their trying to recover their costs, but I hate how rude they are about it. Recently, I heard my daughter gnashing her teeth at night, and I wonder whether this might be damaging the brackets.

Bruxism can exert thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch in the mouth. So yes, it can damage the braces. You should mention the problem to your orthodontist and they should fit her for a bite plate. I did not have one when I only had upper braces, but they gave me one when the lower ones were put on. Bruxism can get worse while wearing braces(mine did). Hope that helps.

BTW-Does the orthodontist know how rude and insensitive his staff is being to you? Being you are paying them so much for orthodontic treatment, I think it is unacceptable to be treated like that. There are other doctors who would love to have you as a patient and will be kinder and sensitive to your needs.

you might have to get a mouth it probably won't fit over the braces though get a new orthodontist's they shouldn't act like that

that is damaging her brackets. just like how hard and sticky foods, can begin to wear off the glue from the bracket. and your orthodontist really should be getting mad, because your daughter should really be more careful if shes had this happen more than once. although iv never heard of a broken bracket, those brackets are pretty sturdy and made of steel/metal. so i dont think it should break the bracket, but make the bracket fall off... then yes.
