Does anyone else grind their teeth whilst they sleep?

I've been told by my boyfriend that I grind my teeth while I sleep! Does anyone else do this? I've read that its called Bruxism. I want to know if I can do anything to stop it rather than getting a tooth guard from my dentist which is quite costly apparently!

Bruxism is grinding your teeth. You need a night mouth guard to prevent damage to your teeth . You could even fracture your jaw if you grind too hard and too much. Tension may be one cause for this so you need to learn to relax...maybe do yoga or read. Do you feel tense a lot? You can buy a mouth guard in the drug stores. Not sure how much they cost but I don't think they are that expensive.....certainly not as much as a dentist.

Yes i do this as well sometimes,i,ve read somewhere that its not good,so i just try to ignore it as i don,t want to know the details as i,m a worrier at heart.

I DON'T KNOW. I CAN'T HEAR MYSELF WHEN I AM ASLEEP.

I do this.

I did get a tooth guard and, as you say, it was very expensive. I found it too uncomfortable to wear regularly.

It's probably because of stress, so try to be less stressed

my hubby does,it drove me so insane the other night i put a pillow over his face ....

i'm not too sure as i am asleep at the time

I DO ITT.. well annoys my boyfriend, its not a problem though. i think theres a guard u can get at the dentist though.. it can be a good thing though cos when u get a filling, you wear it down so its not all pointy really quicky. hehehe

yeah my sister says i do. i've read it in a magazine that some people really do grind their teeth while sleeping. it's some sort of a disorder. it's not that bad but i've heard that too much pressure while grinding can dislocate your jaw or something. i dunno if it's true but i got braces years ago cos i was overbite.

and yeah, i think we grind our teeth due to stress.

I do too.
It's likely to be stress-related - have you started a new job or moved house recently?
Try some of those relaxing herbal teas before bed, see if that helps.
Otherwise, it would be a good idea to get a tooth guard - I know they're not cheap (I was quoted upwards of 拢70) but that will be peanuts compared to the potential cost of having your teeth capped where they've worn down too far, or having fillings becasue the wear has left them vulnerable.

Your teeth will suffer a bit if you can't stop, and don't do anything about it.

In the meantime, try relaxation exercises and use fluoride toothpaste - it can help to prevent and repair very minor tooth damage.

Good luck, and chill!
;)

Yes I did. It seems to be really quite common. Rejected a tooth guard; the dentist did some things to alter my bite and it is much less now apparently

I do and it is caused by stress i have actually cracked one of my teeth and am ringing the dentist later today to hopefully get it filled...May sound stupid but try not to worry.......All the best

You can actually go buy a 99 cent mouth guard at Wal Mart that will do the same thing. That is really all you can do if you grind your teeth, wear a guard. It isn't like you can control what you're doing while you're asleep.

Actually my mom grinds her teeth at night and she got tooth guard at Wal-Mart for $20. She told her dentist that she had gotten it at Wal-Mart and she said it is one of the better kinds to buy, She said the ones that she makes in her dentist office for people don't last long at all . If you don't take care of this problem you will get receding gum lines , because my mom didn't take care of it when it started , so she has receding gum lines.

I grind my teeth! My jaw even clicks and sticks now - im guessing its related. Im also to most laid backed least stressed person imaginable! Do yoga, love herbal tea and get enough sleep! Couldn wear a mouth guard tho - dont imagine it being too much of a turn on! Bu going to have to do something about this jaw - cause it hurts!

My son does this a lot...so much so that he has ground his canine teeth down and is needing reconstructive dentistry. He has had a few splits (a guard that fits over the teeth) but managed to grind through them !!! The splints did not cost anything however, they were free on the NHS so if you are in the UK I would check again with the dentist.
In my sons case they have found the problem is the alignment of his jaw so he is having jaw surgery soon. It may be worth checking whether this is what is causing your Bruxism.

I am a night time grinder and almost drove my fella mental, it got so bad that I'd wake up in the morning with really bad pains in my jaws and wicked head aches, in the end i had a mouth guard made up and now we both sleep peacefully.
Your right the correct term is Bruxism and is often caused by stress and anxiety and often occurs during sleep.
You should get your dentist to make you a special mouth guard, it may seem expensive but without one and continuing night grinding you face the possibility of tooth fracture, loosening of teeth and even tooth loss, in very extreme case it can even effect the jaws, the hearing and cause or make worse TMJ.
Some things you can try to avoid grinding are by cutting back on food/drink that contain caffeine, try avoiding to much alcohol grinding seems twice as bad after a skin full of ale,
if you notice that you clench/grind your teeth during the day place the tip of your tongue between the teeth, this will help train your jaw muscles to relax.
Hope this has been of some help
