Constant throat clearing and cough at night?

I'm on antibiotics and mucinex DM for bronchitis and pharyngitis. It seems to be getting worse at night time? I can't sleep bc I keep coughing and clearing my throat really loudly. It feels like mucus is stuck there and cannot come up! Some came up and it was clear- which is better than before (greenish then yellow)...but it still happens a lot at night and kind of gets worse! What is going on?

There are two causes:

1) You're laying down, and gravity effects mucus like anything else.
2) Your medicine is doing it's job to clear that stuff up. Mucinex is supposed to make you cough. The good news is that you're recovering.

You're just going to have to tough it out. You can try adding an extra pillow. That should help a little. EDIT: Oh, and drink plenty of fluids if you're not already. Warm tea and honey is awesome before bed.

You need to use a humidifier in your bedroom to keep the air moist. Sleep with your head slightly elevated too. You might also try drinking hot liquids before bed to ease this. Keep some hard candy near your bed to suck on at night too and a glass of water handy.

get a vaporizer and run it in low at night. you need moisture to move the phlegm. drink lots of fluids also. OJ or pineapple juice or tomato juice or carrot juice or there's a store called jamba juice. they make smoothies, all fruit and natural juices.
try the "cold buster", the next day i feel better after one.

You could have a sinus infection or cold.

dPaladin is right. Your medicine is working. It is normal for those sysmptoms to worsen at night. You may also experience a loss of appitite, because as much as you are coughing up, that much and more may be going down into your stomach. You really need to force yourself to drink fluids. Juice, gatorade ( if you are not diabetic) and water are the best. The Mucinex needs the extra liquid. Keep a glass by the bed and try drinking when you get that sticky throat feeling. If this were me, I'd give it about 4 or 5 more days and if I was not better, I'd call the doc back. I think you should call the doc and ask before you use a vaporizer. If you cough up blood, call ASAP. I hope you feel better soon.
Good luck and best wishes.

do you smoke? stop it
