Coughed up blood this morning...why? |
I am just getting over a bad case of bronchitis. This morning the phlegm I coughed up was laced with a pretty good amount of blood. I was just wondering if this is normal or if it might be a serious problem. I am not a smoker by the way. Thanks coughing up blood could indicate that your bronchitis has advanced to pnuemonia. Or it could be as simple as irritation of the bronchus from coughing. Keep checking your temperature, if it goes over 102, you had better see a doctor. Otherwise, drink at least two liters of water daily, do alot of deep breathing, and during the day take guaffenessin and at night take dextromethorphan, both available otc at your local drug store. this is normal because the skin probly peeled off and was bleeding but you should tell your doctor about that Well if you are a smoker (and most smokers have chronic bronchitis after they've been smoking a while), then you probably have a smoker's disease of some sort of the lungs and should just go to the emergency room because this is a very bad sign. Was it really a 'pretty good amount of blood'? or was it just flecks? It's probably trauma (from the coughing) to the tiny blood capillaries. it's normal to cough up blood after having an illness such as bronchitis, usually the muscles and blood vessles in your throat get strained to the point of rubbing a little raw after coughing excessively. I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues for a few more days. If you are a smoker? Just quit. You are need of a doctors care insurance or not..Can you find a hospital that helps with fees for those who have no insurance. If you qualify they will apply for assistance for you. If not look in the phone book or ask a friend there are a lot of local clinics that will treat you for less. I recently had pneumonia and my visit to the local clinic was $135 to see the nurse practicioner and get antibiotics (They cost extra) and the hospital would have been around $300+. I have nose bleeds and I have sneezed out alot of blood, I suggest you go to a free clinic and see what's wrong with you're chest and respitory because coughing up blood is DEFINETLY not common with bronchitis and could evolve into something even more serious. (Please feel free to answer my questions because I am also very sick) |
