Asthma has been worse lately...need suggestions...?

For about 35 years I had mild asthma, which mainly consisted of a dry, persistent cough, and a tendency to get pneumonia and bronchitis. About once/yr I'd go to the dr and get an inhaler and a few days of steroids. The last year my asthma has gotten MUCH worse; I'm not sure why. I am not under more stress and am living in the same place, etc. I am now taking Asmanex each morning and Singulair each night plus using albuterol when needed, and still am frequently short of breath. Last Friday I worked in the lawn for about an hour and for the last 5 days now have been short of breath no matter what I take. We live in an area with very poor health care. I don't know what my options are here. Do any of you asthma sufferers have any suggestions here?

I have severe asthma and I take Advair twice a day, plus I take combivent daily. I use the nebulizer with albuterol daily, as well. When the lawns are mowed at my home, I get really worse asthma than normally. I think your doctor may want to give you an 'emergency' inhaler, such as combivent, and may even prescribe Advair for you. These have saved my life more than once. (I am not exagerating).
I thought it was strange that I had bronchial asthma, badly, as a child, then, went through years of not having problems. When I started having asthma, again, in my 50's, I was shocked. I know that stress does make my asthma worse, as well as mowed lawns, stuffy rooms, emotional distress and pet dander.
I believe that your doctor needs to give you more meds than you are taking. Remember, the worst part of asthma CAN be that you have an attack, alone, and you CANNOT drive to the hospital for help or breath enough to speak on the phone to call for help! For this reason, I believe it is important to keep Advair and an emergency inhaler with you at all times. Be careful. When you cannot breath, you cannot think clearly, either.

get to the ER or urgent care. this is called an exacerbation and can be deadly. make a follow up appointment with your doctor.

Any breathing problem is an emergency. Go to the ER. I have asthma and emphysema. Also take singulair and albuterol. You may have a respiratory infection and need antibiotics or steroids. ER will take an xray and any other tests to diagnose you properly. Please go.

Consult your doctor the first time you start wheezing or if the condition doesnt respond to the prescribed treatment. take your peak expiration flow rate.stay on the GREEN zone. This is 80 percnt of predicted or personal best...

My guess is that you have "outgrown" Singulair and might need a different treatment.

I had to make 5 trips to the Hospital before they got me on the right track, (10 different drugs)

Now I do Spriva and asmenx once a day, Albuterol for nebulizer and rescue puffer

You really need to see the doctor, because Singular cause upper respiratory infection which need antibiotics. Also my daughter is on Singular and when her coughing gets out of con troll I don't use her machine I just stop her Singular for 2days and the coughing calms down. I use the bathroom steaming method when the coughing is dry and raspy. She also has a machine but I don't need to use it when I stopped the Pretnazone. The side affects from the singular are upper, while the pretnazone is a steroid and weakens the immune system. When you can no longer find relief in the treatment go to the doctor. I have a dry persistent cough and my doctor prescribed Asmecot. It really helps.
