7 week cough?

I have had it for 7 weeks - some times it's so bad i cant catch my breath, it sounds like a smokers cough but i DONT smoke.
I have tried cough medicines and honey,
been to the practice nurse and prescribed antibiotics and prescription cough medicine - all to no avail.
I have recently in the past week developed a pain in the inner corner of my eyebrow arch, near the top of my nose - it hurts when i cough or press it.
I had bronchitis 3-4 years ago, could it be that?
Don't want to go to dr's as they don't like dealing with coughs and colds
I am at my wits end - any other ideas what it could be or how to alleviate it?

The vast majority of coughs are triggered by viruses rather than bacteria, so very few respond to antibiotics. Prolonged cough is usually due to bronchial hyper-reactivity ( lung irritability,) which follows on from viral illnesses. For safety's sake the rule of thumb is that a cough which has persisted for 4 weeks or more justifies a chest x-ray to exclude rare causes of cough like TB. If the film is clear it means it is just a matter of waiting for it to settle. If it does fail to do so inhaled steroids can be used short term as a stabiliser.

P.S. ALL cough mixtures, both prescription and over the counter are pretty worthless and so few good doctors ever prescribe them!

I had a cough for about 4-5 weeks and was prescribed antibiotics that cleared it up. They said if it continues you would need a chest scan. You may have a problem with your lungs and your chest making it hard to breath. You could also have a build up of phlem so try and cough this up. Another possibility is that allerfy season is coming up. When I get hayfever I get really sneezy, my eyes itch and I get coughy and wheezy. So if you have an allergy that may be the answer. This sounds more than a cough/cold so I suggest you go and see your doctors and tell them that oyu have had this for over a month. But also you could try taking a hayfever/allergy medication and of course coughing up as much phlem as possible!

I have had a cough for a month, and WAS on antibiotics! It did nothing. They said it had to be a virus and thus, antibiotics would do nothing. I had my lungs xrayed for pneumonia. Clear.

It was bronchitis at one point and I had that deep cough. Now I have more phlegm and have stopped the codeine syrup which helped. Helped me sleep if nothing else - see if you can get some.
You'll need to see a doctor to get the prescription tough. It's worth it.

You may have bronchitis and a sinus infection and some of the infections are resistant to the usual antibiotics. You may need a different antibiotic. If you feel congested in your chest and have phlegm, get some mucinex, which is an over the counter medication.
