Bleeding disorders and periods?

About a year ago, a friend who moved away called me up. As we talked, we got on the subject of hemophilia, which she had been learning about in class. She went on about how hemophilia is rarer in woman than men and, that if it DOES occur in a woman, she will bleed to death on her first period. Now, I have a bleeding disorder (it's not hemophilia, though), as do my mother and grandmother and my great grandmother had it too (which doesn't exactly mean her first claim is wrong, but still. Only 1 man in my family has the condition). None of us have bleed to death from having our period. And, as far as I know, none of us even have (or had) unusual periods.

But recently, I went to the doctor's and, as soon as he saw I had a bleeding disorder, he asked about the severity of my periods (heaviness, how long they lasted, etc.) and I suddenly remembered what my friend had said.

Is there any truth to her claims? I've done some research on bleeding disorders in the past and nothing came up.

hmm thats odd..
when I lost my virginity I started bleeding NON-STOP in clumps, like I was peeing blood straight for 15 hours, until I got so pale and dizzy, i was rushed to the hospital, and eventually passed out there. They told me I had lost so much blood that if I had waited any longer to get to the hospital that I would have bleed to death. None of the doctors I went to ever figured out what it was. I researched the internet and have never found a case similar to mine...it is forever a mystery... be thankful you dont have that!!

A bleeding disorder exists when it is hard for a person to stop bleeding. When a person bleeds, the blood clots, stopping the bleeding. The clotting process, also called coagulation, changes blood from a liquid to a solid state. It takes both blood cells (called platelets) and proteins (called clotting factors) for blood to clot properly. When a person has a bleeding disorder, the blood platelets are not working like they should, or there are not enough platelets or clotting factors in the blood. This causes a person to bleed for longer periods of time than normal. Bleeding disorders tend to run in families and can be hard to detect in women. These disorders can be controlled, so a person can have a healthy and full life.
