My fiance has six fingers on each hand..?

after he was born the doctor tie thread around it to remove it because it was only tissue and nerve.now he only has these tiny little buds on there but my question was.. what causes that? is it a birth defect or dominant trait or what? and also when we have kids, will they end up with that too?

No... I dont think so unless he has a underlying disease but in what I have learned in Med/Nursing school I cant think of one. Love him for who he is and dont worry about something like that

It's merely a genetic anomaly. If it is a recessive trait, the odds are roughly one in four that your future children will inherit this trait.

I believe it is a dominant trait with 5 fingered parents, I doubt it's a birth defect.

understand that i am not a doctor but the medical term for this is Polymelia. It is a birth defect and it causes different things for people. There is no known hereditary things that causes this and these things "just happen". Same reason why people are born together aka siamese twins, born with 6 toes, born with no arm; it just happens.

It's called Polydactalism. Yes, your children could have this condition, too. But, with modern medicine, the extra digits could easily be removed much more neatly than your fiance's were.

I have know many cats who had several digits on each paw. In fact, Earnest Hemingway's cats were all Polydactile cats. I think it's cute on a cat, but I'm sure people would just be cruel to a person with this condition.
