Can someone explain bells palsy? |
thought my 60yr old mother had a stroke sat morning when we took her to the hospital they said much to our releif that it was not. her right side if her face went numb and was diagnosed with bellspalsy.(not sure if im spelling this correct or not)can someone explain what this is thankx Some think it's caused by a virus and causes your facial nerve to swell where it exits your skull behind the ear, and this blocks the nerve from transmitting until the swelling goes down. It can be treated with a steroid for the inflamation, and an anti viral for the suspected cause, but should be done as soon to the onset as possible. I had it for about a month, but sometimes it can last quite a bit longer. She needs to get eyedrops or ointment so her eye doesn't dry out (at night especially) since she won't be able to blink or close her eye until it runs its course. Good luck to you both! there is some involvement of the facial nerve, cranial nerve 7, it sometimes happens for no known reason, but there are many causes from infection to a blow to the head, basically cranial nerve 7 controls motor movement to the facial muscles so they droop on the same side as the involved nerve. damage to the nerve in face usually but not always caused by sitting in a draft.Usually recovery is 100% but not always. Bell's Palsy means that the 7Th cranial nerve (the Facial Nerve) is paralyzed, the exact cause is unknown but some say it's a virus or infiltration of nerve with cells.in 85% it goes away in time, 10% will have partial palsy, and 5% will remain paralyzed. But it is not dangerous. |
