Is this a pinched nerve?

About a month ago, i felt a sharp pain in the back on my shoulder... I thought i was stung by a bee, but there was no mark. Now every day or two, i get that same pain, and then my shoulder feels real sore for awhile. Is this a pinched nerve? If so, what is the treatment? Thanks!

No, it's not a pinched nerve. You are experiencing one of two things: 1) a recurring muscle spasm that results in sharp, localized pain, or, 2) A trigger point in the muscle.

Either condition can be alleviated with massage, ice or heat or stretching. If the pain radiates to other areas, like into other areas of your back or down your arm, you are dealing with a trigger point (a small area of local irritation within the muscle). Try laying on a tennis ball on the affected area to release the spasm/trigger point. Stay on tender spots for 30-60 seconds, then find another area and repeat.

a pinched nerve is term used to mean the nerve root exiting from your spinal joints is as they say "pinched" whether from mechanical misalignment of the spinal bones or inflammatory process or responses. the most accurate way of knowing a pinched nerve status is through MRI testing.

but if you are concerned about your shoulder pain, what you can do is keep a pain journal. you can do it mentally or you can write it down. when you do get it, what was the activity you were in ( reading a book, or doing dishes...etc,) what was the position of your neck ( forward bent, was it craned, were you looking up), how long did the pain stay ( seconds, minutes), check your posture (your ear more forward than your shoulder maybe) and were there any movements or postures that relieved the pain. if you see a trend/ pattern, how consistent are these patterns then you would do best to pay your MD a visit.

It sounds like a pinched nerve. Go to a doctor for help. Physical therapy or steriod injections may help.
