What cause bedsores and are they still a common occurence?

I know the general syptoms and what they look like, but are they still relavent today with modern medicine?

Bedsores are still very much a common occurance. Also called pressure ulcers. They are caused by lack of blood supply to a particular area. So if some lies on their side for days and days or even weeks their skin in that particular area will not get the blood flow that it needs (nutrition) and it will start to break down. They can be horrible extremely big and very hard to heal. Another common area for bedsores is the heel of the foot and the lower back. These areas get alot of pressure/lack of nutrition. Hope this helps

Its very common with the elderly people. When someone bed rests awhile its commonly known.

yes they are, someone staying in one position, older people whom don't move much and don't have anyone to change their position, and massage the areas they will get a bed sore

Yes, they are. People who are invalids, quadriplegics, morbidly obese....they all get bed sores. We just have better medicines to try and treat it. But they still occur.

Friction and no muscle tone
Staying in one position for an inodinant amount of time causes soft tissue to break open.

Bed sores or decubitous ulcers are most common in patients that are sedentary or non-ambulatory. They usually occur on the pressure points of the bidy where the bone is closest to the skin. When there is constant pressure, the skin begins to break down and cause a sore. You can still see them, I would expect even more today as healthcare is on a rapid decline and many pts in a hospital (unless they have family members to attend to them) don't get the attention they need especially if they are incapacitated.
