What are bedsores? |
What are bedsores? Bedsores or decubitus are lessions that appear on immobile patients in bony areas of the body. They can become life threathning in later stages and they smell very bad, like rotten flesh, as the cells and tissue are effectively dead. They are treatable and are mostly caught in the early stages. They are very sore and can go as deep as the bone if not treated. They are areas of skin - most often on the hips, tailbone, outside of ankles that become red due to pressure from the mattressand lying in one position too long and then the skin breaks down and they become open sores - thus "bedsores" when you lay in bed too long, a pressure point comes on to one area. it turns red and itchy and this is a bed sore They are what Lazy bastards get from lying in bed till mid-day hi "bedsores" are acutally decubitus ulcers caused by lack of oxygenated blood flow to any part of your body. when the lack of oxygenated blood persists for a long period of time the skin breaks down. they range form stage one to four, and normally appear on boney promenance areas like your tailbone or hip area. stage one is red like when you cross your legs too long and four is when there is actual opening to the skin sometimes down to the muscle layer. the best is to prevent the issue and move every two hours to a different position. and if you already have one the hyperbarric oxygen chamber does wonders. Pop over and d t/r shall reveal all. Bedsores are ulcerations of the skin caused by pressure over bony areas of the body such as the coccyx, hips, ankles, and knees. When a person remains in the same position for a long period of time the pressure between the bone and the surface you are sitting or lying on prevents the tissues from getting the needed oxygen and nutrients. The tissues under the skin begin to deteriorate and eventually will cause the skin over it to open up. These can take an extremely long time to heal as they have to heal from the indide out. Prevention is as simple as frequent repositioning, at lest every 2 hours. Some of these sores can be so deep that bones, muscles and tendons are exposed. |
