I appreciate PATOIS... answer here the way Patois describes the care as almost as an personal experience by the patient herself and Patois can shed more light on how best to care the bedridden,
'Gentleman' Positions like Keeping legs dangling, immobile, stiff too long gives horrible discomfort beyond explanation to anyone
Keep something under the knees and change the position at regular intervals and if there is any mask for O2 the straps tighten around over the ears giving severe unbearable discomfort, inflammation, often resulting with immediate visible deep cut pressure marks, keep changing the strap position without disturbing the position & O2 supply of the mask)
Hence, as the extra care, duty, as an attendent to the patient (or as a SON).(etc)., everyone needs to be aware & check so many levels of sufferings of our loved ones on the bed
The health care staff do their professional best but still any extra care to our loved ones especially at this situations is like removing mountains of pain away from the patient for few seconds. 'Imagine when an ant, mosquitoe is removed while biiting the skin and the patient can just feel it for hours/days and can do nothing (if immobile)'
About BEDSORES
Bedsores result from pressure on the skin typically in patients during hospital recovery or whose mobility is limited in bed (e.g. paraplegics or quadriplegics). They are also called 鈥?pressure sores 鈥?or the medical term 鈥渄ecubitus ulcer鈥?
Causes:
Pressure sores usually result from sustained pressure on your body. They are especially common in areas that are not well padded with muscle or fat and that lie just over a bone, such as your spine, tailbone (coccyx), shoulder blades, hips, heels and elbows. Because your skin and the under lying tissues are trapped between bone and a surface such as a wheel chair or bed, blood flow is restricted.
This deprives tissue of oxygen and other nutrients and irreversible damage and tissue death can occur. Though the affected tissue may die in as little as 12 hours the injury may not be apparent for days or even weeks.
Signs and Symptoms
Stage 鈥?
Initially a pressure sore appears as a persistent area of red skin that may itch or hurt and feel warm and spongy or firm to the touch. In blacks, Hispanics and other people with darker skin the mark may appear to have a blue or purple cast, or look flaky ashen. Stage 1 wounds are superficial and go away shortly after the pressure is relieved.
Stage-2
At this point, some skin loss has already occurred 鈥?either in the epidermis, the outer most layer of the skin, in the dermis, the skin鈥檚 deeper layer, or in both. The wound is now an open sore that looks like a blister or an abrasion, and the surrounding tissues may show red or purple discoloration. If treated promptly, stage 2 sores usually heal fairly quickly.
Stage鈥?
By the time a pressure ulcer reaches this stage, it has extended through all the skin layers down to the muscle, damaging or destroying the affected tissue and creating a deep, crater 鈥?like wound.
Stage-4
In the most serious and advanced stage, a large-scale loss of skin occurs, along with damage to muscle, bone and even supporting structures such as tendons and joints. Stage four wounds are extremely difficult to heal and can lead to lethal infections.

Consult your Doctor (Ayurvedic & Allopathy etc )before trying anything. Not the water bed. Air bed is preferred. Let no artificial material (plastic) touch her skin. Reposition her every two hours. Support her position with pillows behind her back and between her legs. Place real lambswool between her and the bed. The lambswool should be the fabric touching her skin. Keep her skin dry. Bathe her daily. Have a nurse or doctor examine the bedsore and prescribe proper wound care and a diet that will promote wound healing. If possible, air the wound to direct sunlight for 10-15 minutes per day. When repositioning her, use a sheet underneath her to gently move her around to avoid dragging her skin or "shearing". water beds are not as hard as air beds and would cushion hr sore more to relieve the pain till they heal. |
