Will Bariatric Gastric Bypass surgery?

work for those who have thyroid disease?
I have thyroid disease and my doctor said this surgery will help me lose weight.
Has anyone ever lost weight after getting this surgery who has thyroid disease?

Proper correction of hypothyroidism with levothyroxine should take care of any symptoms, including the ongoing weight gain of hypothyroidism.

Conditions that can be expected to improve after weight loss and gastric bypass surgery include:

- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Hypertension
- Abnormal blood lipids, including cholesterol
- Symptoms of osteoarthritis including knee pain and back pain
...

However, bariatric surgery should not affect your thyroid disease. Also, bariatric surgery without proper pre-operative assessment and counseling has a higher chance of failing, and patients can "eat through" their bypass surgery and fail to lose weight unless they are properly counseled and motivated.

The direct answer to your question is that many patients with hypothyroidism who were properly selected and counseled have had bariatric surgery, and have been able to successfully lose weight.

All the best.

I had a girlfriend with thyroid disease that is much better after the surgery. Is actually in the process to reduce the medication(she hope to stop take Synthroid in a couple of months)
