I think it depends on where you live and plan to have the surgery. I know quite a few people who had it in Mexico. That sounds scary, but they all had no problems and loved the hospital where they stayed. The cost was around $7500 - $12,000 depending on whether you bring others to help and if you plan to have them make the arrangements for your trip.

That said...I had the surgery 5.5 months ago and it cost around $18,000 and I had it at Johns Hopkins Hospital. My insurance covered all but $3000, plus specialists fees. Keep in mind that you will need some lab work done and will have to pay that if insurance doesn't cover it. Also, I had to go to a nutritionist and have a psyche evaluation, neither of these were covered by my insurance.

It depends what part of the country you have it done. In Alabama my doctor had a deal with hospital if your insurance would not cover the surgery. Hospital got $9500, Surgeon $2500, and the Anesthesiologist $1500. All had to be prepaid prior to surgery. I had it done in May was 315 lbs, now I am 159

I recieved a summary of service from the hospital the other day for my gastric bypass I had in December and it was over $53,000. Of course this doesn't include any doctor's fees and I won't have to pay all that but thats what I've gotten so far.
