Nurse Disrespecting Patient?

I feel as if one of the nurses I work with seriously disrespected a patient because of her weight. It really bothers me because my hospital is trying to build a successful bariatric surgery program; I just think the way she treated and interacted with this patient was rude, insensitive and perhaps dangerous. This young woman had just had laproscopic gastric bypass. She had been out of surgery maybe 2-3 hours. This nurse made this patient get out of bed and take a walk down the hall. It was truly a dangerous situation as the patient wasn't fully awake from the anesthesia yet. I don't think this woman even knew where she was or what she was doing. The nurse was patting her head and saying patronizing things to her. Later on this nurse was telling another nurse that this woman was "whiney" and and "not a real go getter." I've worked with this woman for awhile now and she has never treated her normal sized patients that way. Should I say something to the Nruse Manager?

I do also have to say that it is typical to walk these patients on the day of surgery. however this woman was obviously still very much under the affect of anesthesia and pain medication.

Yes, definitely tell your manager so she can address the situation. Her attitude and actions could have injured the pt, you may also want to consider writing an incident report.

what are you afraid of someone Else's opinion of you or the care of your patients if you feel it was inappropriate report her if something would have happened two the patient you would all have been in trouble wouldn't you want that kind of care if you were the patient

i would have questioned the nurses behaviour on the day. You should report her as every patient deserves respect and she not only treated this patient without respect and dignity but she placed her in an unsafe position by making her walk whilst under the influence of anasthetic

2-3 hours post-op, this patient should not have been under any sort of anesthesia. Perhaps, she was experiencing some sedation from her pain meds and that is what you saw. Now, if you saw something that made you uncomfortable, you need to report it. You ought to be able to do it anonymously. Its up to the manager to determine how to handle it. I would caution you, however, to be absolutely certain that a misdeed occurred, especially if you are an unlicensed staff like an aide. As a general rule, nurses kinda rule the roost and will make life rather difficult for an aide who steps out of line and likes to point fingers. I'd go the anonymous route and let the company and the manager decide what to do.

Yes, I would definetly report her! Idisagree with one of your answers that the anesthetic had worn off. I've had numerous surgeries and believe me, it takes longer than 2-3 hours to wear off. The nurse was very insensitive to her. Thought nurses were supposed to care and be good to patients. A large majority of nurses really don't even care. It's just a job for money. Wish more were more compassionate and really cared about their patients. Please report her. She sounds like she needs a different occupation. I always try to remember The Golden Rule. How would that nurse feel if the tables were turned? She needs an attitude adjustment. Don't you agree? Surgery of any kind should be treated with caring and loving hands. (Sorry this was so long) I've just had 2 surgeries in the last 3months and this got to me!!
