How can people be so cruel? Obesity ain't easy, folks.?


I have just read some of the closed threads on obesity and I am appalled. Obesity is the only acceptable "politically correct" option for jokes, for discrimination, for staring. Folks, having been there, it is very very difficult. I had Roux-en-Y (gastric bypass) surgery 3 years ago. I had been bedridden with a broken foot, and packed on weight on my already obese frame. People asked how could these people afford to eat that much? Do you not realize that pasta, rice and potatos are less expensive than fruits, fish and veggies? Geez. I now eat about 7 meals (small) a day. I have deficiencies in many vitamins and minerals because of the surgery, and I no longer have diabetes, but have developed hypoglycemia (about 10% of bariatric surgery patients do). One other thing...all the jibes, anger, laughter will not make a person lose weight-if anything, it makes you eat more. NO ONE else can control me. I can only control me. This is a solution. dont mock it.

I would have to disagree with the poster that claims that parents are responsible for bringing up these rude, inconsiderate, mean and hateful children/adults. I know a few people who were raised by cruel and hateful parents, but they took responsibility for their own lives, their own actions, their own judgments and have become a productive part of the community. I believe the problem stems from people not being held accountable for their words, actions, stares, etc. whether it's in regards to obesity or anything else; allowing the blame to be passed on to others instead of where it belongs...the wrongdoers. Obesity is a disease, not a simple food addiction. Losing weight is a constant uphill battle and for many people it takes just too much energy, too much time with little "now" rewards and a lot of obstacles. (Who can resist a tempting slice of chocolate cake? And if you have the cake, gotta have the frosting. And if you have the cake and frosting, gotta have the ice cream. What the hell, may as well have a nice, tall glass of cold milk to wash it all down.) It is so much easier to pack on the pounds than it is to lose them. My best friend is bordering 400 pounds. She eats very little now because she wants/needs to lose the weight. Works two jobs which require her to be on her feet for 16 hours consecutively. Every morning we walk the local mall for either thirty minutes or until she can't walk and talk at the same time and has managed to lose a whopping 4 pounds in the past 3 months. I hear the laughs and the snickers, and I see the stares and people pointing...I'm sure she does too. But, she sticks her nose so high up in the air if it rained she'd drown and her pace picks up. Every now and then she needs the encouragement and support and I suppose that's all I can give her. I wish her luck. The world would be so much better off if there were more people like her in it.

Self esteem is part of the obesity problem, sort of a vicious cycle. Try growing your own fruits and vegetables if you can, that will give you some exercise as well as peace and pride. As for what other people think of you, to heck with them.

GOod advice for all to be more sensible and learning not to judge is one of the main lessons for all of us to grasp.

Here are some ideas to heal your (hypo) issue.

Cause
Hypoglycemia can be caused by excess consumption of simple sugars and refined carbohydrates, food allergies, low thyroid function, nutrient deficiencies (especially vitamin B6, chromium, zinc, essential fatty acids and amino acids such as alanine), excessive exercise, stress, skipped meals (especially breakfast), irregular eating habits, excessive alcohol, drug, or cigarette consumption, over consumption of caffeine beverages, poor protein digestion, protein deficiency, poor digestion due to other factors, low digestive enzymes, low fiber diets, and an excessively refined and processed diet. To achieve lasting relief of hypoglycemia symptoms, all of these factors must be screened for and addressed.

Chronic muscular tension caused by stress throughout the body, particularly in the spinal regions, is another potential cause of hypoglycemia, since stressed body tissues burn fuel at a higher than normal rate, creating a constant need for glucose.

Caution: Although hypoglycemia can exist by itself, it may be an early warning sign for pancreatic and diabetic problems.

Natural Cures

Diet: Be sure to have breakfast and make it a protein rich meal. Also eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day to help keep blood glucose levels up and to help heal the pancreas and adrenals. Be sure your diet consists of organic, whole foods diet and avoid stressor foods such as caffeine, refined sugars, and alcohol. Instead, emphasize fibrous foods, whole grains, seeds, nuts, fermented dairy products, and lean meats and fish. Also be sure to identify and avoid food allergies, and eliminate processed foods, dehydrated powders, and white flour products.

Herbs: Licorice, burdock, and dandelion can help to regulate blood sugar levels.

Juice Therapy: Combine the juice of carrot, beet, burdock root, Jerusalem artichoke, and garlic and drink an 8-ounce glass once or twice a day.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following nutrients can be helpful in preventing and reversing hypoglycemia: chromium, vitamin B complex, vitamin B6, niacin or niacinimide, pantothenic acid, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, calcium, magnesium zinc, trace minerals, free-form amino acids, and adrenal glandulars. If hypoglycemia is due to incomplete absorption of nutrients from food, take hydrochloric acid (HCL) and digestive enzymes. Vitamin B injections can also be helpful as a means of increasing energy levels.

people are very cruel especially to large people...I know all too well how that is..the looks,stares,laughs,giggles,jokes...I have had that first hand...I dont believe I would ever consider having gasteic bypass surgery...I pray alot and watch what i eat and I am still large...I will keep on keeping on and keep praying...Goodluck to you and remember you are loved.

I think people are generally cruel due to their upbringing. They either witnessed &/or were subject to cruelty in the home, or were neglected and not given proper moral guidance. Responsible parents talk to their kids about treating other's respectfully. Unfortunately, todays whack society churns out LOTS of irresponsible, self-absorbed parents. So when people are ignorant, you need look no further than the parents, I say. I agree that the jibes just make things worse. They make you feel like crap, which, if you are addicted to food, compels you to eat even more to numb the feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness such comments provoke. Most people agree you wouldn't be helping an alcoholic by telling them what a worthless drunk piece of crap they are. That'll just make them depressed, which will make them drink even more. Obesity (if the result of compulsive eating) is no different that alcohol, or any other addiction. And food addiction can be the hardest to beat because you can't just quit eating. You have to learn to have a healthy relationship with it, which can be much more difficult than quitting something and not having to face it on a daily basis. The best way to help an obese person, is to love and accept them unconditonally. In doing so you help them learn to love and accept themselves unconditionally. People can't lose weight (not permanently, at least) unless they do it for themselves, and they WON'T do it for themselves, if they don't love and accept themselves.

Compulsions come out of your reactive mind. You as so many other people can erase this reactive mind and live a happier live without this compulsion.
