I'm thinking about getting lap-band bariatric surgery. Any advice?

People out there who have had this surgery or know people who have had this surgery: is it worth it?

Firecracker: can you provide more details about why you don't recommend it? Thanks.

Bariatric surgery is a treatment option for people living with morbid obesity鈥攅specially for those who have not experienced long-term weight loss success through other means. Often referred to as weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery has transformed the health and lives of more than 800,000 people in the past six years.

The cost of Lap-Band surgery varies from about $17,000 to $30,000, depending on where you live. In the past, insurance companies did not cover this procedure, but increasingly they are paying for all or part of it if medical necessity is established by your doctor and if you meet the NIH requirements described above.

Don't do it!!!! THe amount of complications far out weigh the benefits!! you can lose weight the healthy way, it will just take will power and a good support team!! i have done it, you can!

I had two friends who had it done and one died on the table and they brought her back and she has had nothing but problems, she can barely eat without throwing up. Same with the other. Also by brother in law is a doctor and I know what happens more than people think...please research this more!

My friend Marcia got it and she did lose lots of weight...

After the surgery she said she could only eat just a little bit at a time (she had been a pretty big eater before). It makes me wonder why she didn't just eat less and keep all her parts.

not worth it for the 16000 better get the best trainer

go with gastric bypass. lapband has many complications and is constantly in need of adjustments. talk to your doctor and see which one is a better fit for you.

My aunt had the surgery very recent (3wks ago) and she is very happy with the results so far. She dosent suffer from any side affects either as far as I know.

i don't think it is worth it....i meen to me nooooo.. if its worth ur life than yes but if not than don't hoppe that helped :D

My mom had it and it was the best thing she ever did. It was scary at first but after the first few weeks, she felt good and the weight started to melt away. It really helped her as far as knee problems, sleep apnea, and just the overall benefit of not being obese. As long as your doctor thinks you're a good candidate, it could really change your life. Good luck to you!

I have seen this surgery work wonders, but what is troubling to me is there are many who don't follow Dr.'s post-op orders and they pay a very high price in the end. I know because my friend had the surgery and did as he pleased. His body would no longer absorb nutrients he needed. He became very very weak and died in a farm accident that he could have survived had he had strength. Under go the knife if you must, but be warned. Every surgery brings risks, be certain you know them and are willing to take them and PLEASE follow all orders and advise of your health provider! Good luck!

Lap- band should be outlawed. Those things move and fall and have a high failure rate. Better off getting gastric bypass surgery.

A reponsible bariatric surgeon will only do this if you have over 100 pounds to lose.

The first 10% of your weight, you must lose on your own so that your skin is loose enough to have the surgery.

After the surgery, it is not just a matter of the surgery working its magic. You must watch your diet. Sodas and junk food are out for the rest of your life.

Exercise is a must for the rest of your life.

You must prove that you qualify for the surgery in that you really want to lose weight and will be a cooperative patient.

You must also prove that you have tried other things and have failed.

Your primary care physician must be willing to support your surgery.

You will probably not have it covered by insurance so be prepared to pony up about $10,000.00.

Good Luck.

My cousin got the surgery about a year ago havent really lost much weight but is always getting sick and has experience lots of adominal pain she has mentioned to me it wasn't worth it at all. She was told about the surgery from a friend who had amazing result and didn't experience any side effect from the sugery so I guess it depends on your body your medical history and lifestyle. Anyways Good luck on what ever you decide to do hopefully you're one of the lucky ones that has no side effcts from your surgery
