How to balance anxiety and its opposite?


Excess of anxiety causes disorders like depression, anxiety attacks, etc., and excess of the opposite (tranquillity) what does it cause? pasiveness? and how to defeat it? Thanks.

I'd check out some zen Buddhism books if I was you but there is also the possibility that mellowness could become apathy and a lack of interest in the world. But tranquillity could also lead to agape (love of fellow man) and a desire to change the world through acts of compassion and peace into a better place.

Anxiety is caused by a conscious or unconscious fear of something. I would have to observe that in my opinion there is no "excess of tranquility" as this state arises when one feels at peace with ones fellow man and the environment. The only danger to being at peace is a feeling of boredom and this can be easily overcome.

When you were a little child crawling about and eagerly exploring the wonders of your new world you balanced tranquility with anxiety by controlling what you encountered. New and potentially scary things could be dropped or fled from and boredom could be overcome just by exploring new and unknown situations and objects.

You can apply these methods to your adult life by avoiding anxiety producing situations, people and objects or finding out more about them by facing and analyzing the things that scare you and by being an active explorer and participant in your world. Just remember the attitudes you had as a happy baby and apply them.
