Recovering Anorexic with a few Questions?

I know that recovering anorexics usually gain abdominal fat once they start eating a healthy diet again. I have slowly worked my way back up to having atleast 1200 calories of nutritious food a day. I used to only have anywhere between 200-800 calories a day when I had my eating disorder (Very stupid I was, I know). Anyway, I always have had a slow metabolism, but since I have started to recover, I am always finding myself feeling extremely hungry after every meal or snack... even if the food is high in protein or fat or calories. I seem to be loosing weight when I should be gaining. This really doesn't make sense to me. What is going on? I eat six small meals a day, and I always make sure I have balanced meals with protein, fats, whole grains, legumes, etc. I have no idea what is going on.

You never "recover" it's a lifelong battle...I know first hand.

However the reason you are feeling this persistent hunger is because you starved your body! Your body feels like it's just survived a LONG famine, and now it's survival instincts are kicking in and saying "EAT EAT EAT!!! Who knows when the famine will come back! Pack in the fat so we can make it through!" If you are eating and losing you are probably not consuming enough calories per day. Try something simple. Take a regular "eating" spoon and spoon it full but not heaping full of peanut butter an hour or so before bed. In a week or so your body may calm down a little. Those extra calories can mean the difference between constant hunger and satiation.

Maybe you should go visit a health doctor and tell then what is going wrong they will have an explanation to help you start gaining weight and they can help you with your situation. Good Luck!!...Happy Eating!!

I never new anorexia is something someone can recover from.... To my understanding this is a mental health issue that one will always have, like alcoholic.
This might be your problem. Recovery is after surgery or other physical condition. You are anorexic will always be anorexic and need mental health counseling to get better.
Talk to your doctor.

in my experience, the extreme hunger after eating was normal.

when i recovered from an ED, i found similiar problems. i kept losing weight, but after a while it stopped, and i gained 20kgs in less than 1-2 months.

maybe that might happen?
im not sure.
maybe check with your doctor?

well done for recovering, it's very hard.
i relapsed last year, so i hope i will soon have your strength to battle it again.

Your body is probably just used to you starving it for so long that when you start eatting it wants you to eat more. As long as you're following your doctors diet I wouldn't worry at first... if you continue to feel like somethings not right than just as your doctor. He/She is more informed on your health than a bunch of strangers on Yahoo are :) and would probably be more than happy to explain why certain things are happening. And don't forget to ask if they don't tell you! Anyway, I applaud you on getting healthy and dealing with your anorexia. Hope you get better soon!

First off. Congratulations!!!! I'm really happy you are eating healthy again. I don't know why, you are losing but I would see a doctor. Maybe you need more calories. You are not stupid. You are smart for getting you life on a healthy path.
