I took Diflucan for a yest infection and it didn't work. What do I do ?

I have a severe yeast infection and I took Diflucan 3 days ago and the symtoms have only gotten worse. I was treated 1 week ago for bacterial vaginosis. I have the thick cottage cheese like discharge and it is driving me crazy with the burning and itching. Could these be symtoms of something else?

Any time a female takes an antibiotic, there's an increased risk of a yeast infection. There are normal amounts of yeast in EVERY vagina -- these amounts are kept in check by bacteria that live in the vagina -- so it's sort of like nature's 'checks and balances' system.

If you're on an antibiotic, often, the medication will kill the good, with the bad -- leaving fewer bacteria to prevent the yest infection. Not ALL yeast infections will respond to diflucan -- some may need mitroconazole or ketoconazole.

There is also a possibility that there is some different type of bacterial infection occurring -- although, given your history -- the yeast infection is most likely. Try a different over the counter yeast infection medication . . . and if it doens't work, go see your physician.

seek medical attention, you will need antibiotics.

So you were treated for bacterial vaginosis (I've had that before) and a yeast infection? Wow. I hope you are OK. I'm thinking maybe if its a yeast infection that you've been dealing with for a week or two then one dose of diflucan isn't enough. Call your ob/gyn and let them know that your treatment isn't working.

Sounds strange, but if you put a tampon into unflavored, cultured yogurt, then insert it into your vagina and leave it in all night, the infection should subside by morning. You may also want to spread some of this yogurt on and around your vaginal opening. Wear clean cotton panties and a pad.
