Is there any chance a Psychiatrist would prescribe pain killers for depression? |
I just got back from Iraq and am having a hard time. Im taking wellbutrin and 20 milligrams of valium a day. But the only thing that really helps are pain killers, which I buy off the street, and hate doing. There is absolutely no chance a reputable psychiatrist would perscribe you pain killers for depression. It seems unlikly unless depression is a known off label use Wellbutrin and Valium??? You have 1 amping you up and 1 slowing you down. Easy on the Valium, it is a Benzodiazepine, the most addictive drug there is. No, probably not... Yeah, try Dr. Kevorkian I really doubt it. Are you seeing a doctor at a veterans hospital? Any benzodiazipam drygs are pretty addictive, mixing them with other meds is not too smart. Talk to a psych doctor at the vets' hospital. They have more practice with PTSD. Good luck! I am so sorry that you are having such a difficult time. It sounds as if you have PTSD. Are you taking painkillers to escape the emotional pain? You know that is not the correct way to deal with your depression. Please, believe me that is only making your life much worse. A psychiatrist can prescribe painkillers if he/she thinks you need them. They have to be trained about pain management. Please be totally honest with your doctor. Everything. Tell him about all of your pain-especially your emotional pain. Honestly you may consider hospitalization. There you can work through your pain and they will give you the medication that will help you. Bill , I hate to tell ya this but "YOU GOT A MONKEY ON YOUR BACK"Pain pills are opiates and your "whole hard time and depression" is caused by coming down off the pills. Tell your Doctor and he can help wean you of the opiatesThis is nothing to be ashamed of if ya admit it. You aren't the only one to come back from war or a traumatic accident and get "hooked" I have known police officers who work drug details and due to a gunshot wound or some other physical injury think they can't function without them and that what they are doing is OK. I don't know what happened in Iraq but I go know that in Vietnam opiates and amphetamines were easily obtained . So be honest with your Doc and tell hi what ya told the rest of us Stay away from the painkillers. They may make you feel better for a time but they can be highly physically addictive. I'm assuming you have a combination of depression and PTSD. I hope you're getting some form of counseling or psychotherapy to help you deal with what you went through over there. There's no magic pill for that. Many times people with depression will have to try a few different meds before they find the one that works for them. Wellbutrin may not be effective for you. PLEASE stay away from the painkillers. Becoming addicted to them will only compound your problems. Believe me substance dependence can be a living hell. |
