Serious leg muscle injuries - how to best recover?

Three days ago I made the mistake of walking through a plate glass door... not drunk, or otherwise intoxicated, just thinking of other things and not paying attention. The worst of my injuries was an 8 inch wound along my shin that partially severed the tibialis anterior muscle. My understanding is this is the muscle which pulls your foot up and stabilises the ankle.

My doctors have told me I have a pretty long recovery to look forward to... 6 months before I can probably run again. As I am a pretty active sportsperson and exerciser this injury has been pretty devastating for me.

Therefore, I wanted to pose a few questions and hopefully get some educated answers.

How soon should I start doing exercises and what kinds should I do?

Would eating a high-protein diet (which I did to facilitate muscle building before the injury) help in the muscle recovery process? Would supplements like creatine etc. help?

Lastly, how soon is too soon to start pushing myself?

Thanks

can people please provide links if applicable.

Thanks

There are many questions that need to be answered including : did you have a surgical repair, do you have any other medical history, do you smoke, if not surgically repaired, how large is the tear, was is just muscle, or was the tendon involved as well?

These are all medical considerations that lend itself to different answers. It would be negligent of anyone to advise you as to what to begin doing and when until one has examined you and discussed the case with your doctors.

You may need a period of immobilization, or you might be able to begin some exercise right away...this is how variable it can be.

Do not begin any formal exercise until cleared to do so. If you have a limited weightbearing status, follow it explicitly and don't cheat.

One cannot really "speed up" the healing process, there is no evidence that a high protein diet will help speed up recovery unless you are already malnourished. The best thing you can do is to prevent hindering the recovery process. Don't smoke!

In short, these questions really need to be answered by an orthopedic surgeon who has physically examined you.

Good luck with your recovery

what a weird thing, i got a foot injury about 7 hours ago and it hurts so bad, just do what i do, put ice on it for a couple of days, then wrap it in a kind of cloth, and it may take a couple of days/weeks to recover.

If it hurts it's too soon.

There is one method available that will allow you to speed up healing and make sure the injury heals correctly/completely.
It's not fun or pleasant, results are dependant upon the amount of time/energy you put into fixing the problem.
