Help please. Why does my 9 years old nose bleeds from one nostril at-least once a month?

I make him lie down and soak his head with cold water and put
a napkin on his face, it stops sometimes within 10 minutes.
He does not pick his nose, nor any injury or tedious work out nor he is allergic to any medicine or environment.

i used to have the same problem when i was younger. mine would come about with dry air, extreme change in temp, or any slight bump on the nose. first of all....DO NOT make him lay down or put his head back! to stop the bleeding, have him sit up with his head down towards the floor, pinch the tip and the bridge of his nose and place a cold rag on the back of his neck, this should stop the bleeding very quickly. to prevent the bleeding you can try a humidifier, or use a q-tip to apply a small amount of vaseline in his nostrils, this will prevent the inner walls from drying and cracking which is what usually causes the bleeding! you may need to talk to you doctor about having his nose "cauterized" not sure of spelling but they put a q-tip in his nose that has chemicals to "burn" the nerve endings and seal them. i had this done, it wasn't a pleasent experience but it worked! the nose bleeds stopped. good luck!

get his adenoids checked by the Dr

It could be a varicose vein that needs to be cauterized. I usually bleed from one nostril in the spring when the weather gets dry.

Could be the air in your house is too dry. put vaseline inside his nostrils. I had lots of nosebleeds like that when I was a teen.

hm do you live in a hot and dry climate. what does his peditrician say about this. If nothing, have you asked to see a specialist like an ear nose and throat (ENT) doctor. and possibly a nurologist. Either way you need to pursue this activly for your son's sake. pls post more feedback if you still have more frustration

if you keep it too warm or too dry inside your house it'll make it bleed.
avoid giving him benadryl and try to make sure he doesn't get too hot. he needs to be taken to a doctor though.
i'd also suggest removing all living plants from inside and be careful as to what perfumes are used in the area he stays in alot.

it's possible that he just needs to have his nose packed once and it stop completely, but he needs a doctor.

When this happens as often as you say then blood work is in order. I speak from experience. All three of my daughters have blood disorders and the first sign/symptom were the bloody noses. Schedule an appointment with the Doctor and ask that blood work be done and that a clotting time be included. I have one daughter with idiopathic throbocypina and the other two have von Wilenbrand's Disease. This hopefully is not the case with your son. But I learned that all too often nose bleeds are dismissed as dry membranes, colds, etc. and then unfortunately turn out to be something more serious. Always best to play it safe.

There are many reasons for any nose bleed.

You have already have ruled out a few and most of the answers points to other causes. The answers are very good but no one has given an answer that grabbed my attention, so, here it is.

Ten minutes of bleeding can kill a 9 years old if the vessel involved is large enough, the child is alive mainly because it is must be re-occurring, involving only very tiny capillary.

How to stop nose bleed:

The child is old enough so the child must learn the method to stop the bleeding on its own.

It is done by applying pressure on the nose at certain spot, with head tiled backward and sitting down or lying down, it should stop in few seconds and the person must stay down for 10 to 15 minutes (hold the position).

The pinching point is near nose-bridge at the top of the septum, a doctor can point out general location of it, if you are not able to find it or find it and point it out to the child, so the child can take action on its own, next visit to a doctor can further clarify the location for you.

Other possible solutions to prevent this from happening:

Buy a nose spy like "oceanspray" and irrigate the nose from time to time, atleast once a day in the morning. More offent (two to three times a day) if it is dry and hot or very cold and dry. Both condition can crack the skin and the capilary containing blood near it.

Investigation of the cause:

Doctor are able to diagnose from the nformation that you supply so you need to investigate the cause on your own, doctor is not there when it happens.

Invest in good room temperature and humidity merter, and note down the temperature and humidity with date and time in other column write down what the child was doing, example playing, runing, head balancing...... See if there is a perticular pattern is emmerging.

It is seen in many children that for no obvious reason, bleeding from nose occurs. There are various common causes like nose-picking, infections, etc. It might at times be due to the hot climate or high physical activity.
It might be possible that the child would be nose-picking at times leaving some infection, leading to bleeding at some other time. And, perhaps that might be the reason for your not being able to associate this with nose-picking.
Homeopathy medicines have helped many children, you can consult as well.
However, it is very likely that this problem continues till the child is normally 14 or 15 years old. After 12th year, it should start reducing.
