I hurt my knee when I fell over on ice I've had a x-ray on it and showed no break?

I saw a consultant at my local hospital who sent me for physio which I've had for three weeks with not a lot of improvement, The physio has ruled out ligament damage but said it could be that I have some cartilage that has come loose inside thats floating around it is very swollen and I cant straighten or bend my knee propley, when I walk on it , it feels as though the bones are rubbing together and giving way. Has anyone got any solutions on this painful injury.

It sounds a lot like you injured the cartilage on the underside of your knee cap and some may have dislodged. This will not show up on x-ray and it takes quite a while for it to heal and may need surgery to completely heal. The physio can help but its important to make sure you are doing the right exercises and avoiding the wrong exercises. Anything that puts a lot of stress on the underside of the knee cap will cause pain and should be avoided or minimized.

could be torn ligaments.. same thing happened to my dad skiing.. good luck!

try another doctor if that one is no help!!!

U HURT UR SELF REALLL BAD.!

Simple, avoid any walking at all and just watch TV all day. You'll heal in no time :-)

An Xray wouldn't show up torn or loose cartilage. You might need an MRI scan if the physio doesn't work - 3 weeks might seem like ages but some soft tissue injuries can take months to heal, even longer than a break. Give it another couple of weeks and if you really can't bear it, get the physio to book you back in with the consultant. Good luck :)

OK, I fell down a flight of concrete stairs and damaged both knees so I have experience.

Here is my suggestion.

Take 2 Ibuprofen twice a day (they help get rid of swelling and inflammation).

Stay off your legs and ice your knee as much as possible.

If this does not improve the situation, get a black steel hinged knee brace that wraps around the upper calf and lower thigh.
That will take your weight off the knee joint and in my case improved the situation over one weekend.

Good Luck.

You should see an orthopedic surgeon and he will order an MRI . X-rays are only good to rule out bone injuries and don't help much with occult injuries to bones or any soft tissue damages such as tears with muscles or ligaments. A lot of these damages are repaired by surgery only since the conservative treatment such as therapy hasn't helped.
