Imediate care of Babies born by Diabetic mellitus mother, either sick or well after birth.?

I am particular on immediate nursing management of new born infant in 1st few days of life.

Infants of diabetic mothers (IDM in medical parlance) tend to be exceptionally large, particularly if the mother's blood sugar was not well controlled in later pregnancy.

But the fact that they look so robust does not mean that they are healthy. Because they have had an increased supply of sugar through the umbilical cord, their own body gets used to dealing with this increased glucose supply by increasing the amount of insulin it produces.

At birth, when the umbilical cord is cut, the sugar supply is suddenly interrupted, and the elevated insulin levels drive the blood glucose levels down, often to dangerous levels. The child may even get too lethargic to nurse properly.

Therefore, close and frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels are required. Monitoring should continue until it is shown that the child can properly take in nutrition and regulate their own blood glucose levels within the normal range.

Seems kind of cruel to keep sticking the baby for samples, but OH SO necessary.
