Why is it that 'anchor babies' are entitled to free health care?


Besides that fact that they are U.S. citizens what else gives them the priviledge to free health care?

Just consider Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, the second busiest maternity ward in the U.S. In 2006, 70 percent of the women giving birth in Parkland were illegal immigrants. That added up to 11,200 babies for which Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million to deliver these babies, the feds another $9.5 million and Dallas taxpayers tossed in $31.3 million. The average illegal patient is 25 years old and giving birth to her second anchor baby. We could also talk about California, but you get the point.

By law, illegal immigrants cannot be denied medical care based on their inability to pay or their immigration status. These women also receive free prenatal care, medication, car seats, bottles, diapers and formula.

The U.S. and a few other countries offer citizenship to anyone born on their soil. The United Kingdom and Australia abandoned this practice in the 1980s after being abused by immigrants for many years."

Cristobal Silverio entered the states illegally in 1997 to work as a fruit picker, bringing with him his wife and three children, all illegal aliens. The following year Mrs. Silverio gave birth to a fourth child, and with that birth the family had an "anchor baby"鈥攁n American citizen by birth, who provided the entire Silverio family with a free pass to remain in the United States permanently. Unfortunately the baby was born prematurely, spent three months in the neonatal incubator, and cost the San Joaquin Hospital more than $300,000. Meanwhile, the oldest Silverio daughter married an illegal alien and gave birth to her own anchor baby, and then Cristobal鈥檚 wife gave birth to yet another baby.

Anchor babies are United States citizens from the moment they鈥檙e born, and they instantly qualify for public welfare aid. And over 300,000 anchor babies become citizens each year in the United States thanks to the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside." The two Silverio anchor babies generate $1000 per month in public welfare funding for the family; the premature baby gets $600 a month for asthma, and the healthy baby gets $400. The Silverio family earned $18,000 last year for picking fruit, and the government gave them another $12,000 for their two anchor babies.

Most illegal aliens do not have medical insurance. But lack of medical insurance doesn鈥檛 mean they don鈥檛 get medical care when they need it. Because of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1985, hospital emergency rooms are required by law to treat uninsured people without reimbursement whether or not they have insurance. As Cosman writes, "Anchor babies born to illegal aliens instantly qualify as citizens for welfare benefits and have caused enormous rises in Medicaid costs and stipends under Supplemental Security Income and Disability Income."

So to answer WHY, it's because the federal government REFUSES to do its actual job--secure the borders. It also refuses to correct the ERROR of pretending birth place equals citizenship--as Europe finally got right so the PCers out there better not scream "bigotry" because that would be European-bashing.

Rolling out a red carpet of freebies attracts illegals. This is done at everyone's expense, including the waiting would-be legal immigrants who wait years to come here legally and CONTRIBUTE to society. Illegals tend to put their country of origin first and send the money they get illegally back there as well. They take jobs our unskilled high school dropouts SHOULD do so that they decide to get an education or learn a trade.

It's just bad government.
