Why would a baby be born with low white blood cell count and a lung infection.?

The mother is in good health and took good care of herself.

Sometimes when babies born vaginally they can catch some bacteriae that are part of the normal vaginal canal of themother even if the mother took well care, but because baby' immune system is not as strong as the adult they can not fight it well.
In other cases, babies can even aspirate their own fetal stool when they are even in the mom's belly but that condition is more serious and give the baby more symptoms.
The most important thing is to examine the baby and see the factors that coud have give it because in medicine you can have many options.

Just because the mother takes good care of herself doesn't mean that her baby is going to be born without any problems. Maybe the baby's parents just have bad genetics. There are some things that we can't control no matter how hard we try.

This is a minor situation, and has probably nothing to do with Mom, or taking good care of herself.

Please, look at the cup 1/2 full, this is really minor and can be corrected readily.

It really, really could be much worse.

I hope baby and Mom will continue to have small situations in life.

good luck

You may want to pass this on to the new mother:
White blood counts: Normal Newborn Range: 50 - 62% Optimal Newborn Reading: 56.

this is a question that must be answered by the pediatrician caring for the baby.
