ECG on my baby help needed?

My son was unwell at 7 weeks and was taken into hospitail for a week where he had 2 ECGs done (i dont know why they did two)

The ECGs came back fine.Latley for no apprent reason my son (he seems happy in himself) has fases of going really pale sorta grey, and his temples, forhead and some times the bridge of his nose and the outer corners of his eyes go a bluish colour

I have spoken to NHS direct and they has said that as he had ECGs and they came back ok, that they dont know what the problem is and as hes acting normal, i shouldnt worry

Well bing a mother i am worrying, i have searched the net and the only thing which most match his simptoms relate to heart deffects.

Now if my son had a heart defect surely it would of been picked up when he was 7 weeks and had 2 ECGs?

Or could somthing of happned to his heart since, are all heart problems there at birth?

I feel like im being brushd off and i dont care what they say it not rights for my son to keep changing colour

my son is 5 months and 3 days old.
He went to hospital at 7 weeks because he would get in such a state, totaly unconsolable and scream to the point were he screamed all his breath out, his eyes would roll he would not breath for upto 20/30 secs turn BLUE and then pass out!

He Had blood culture tests, ECGs, chest xray and a ph test for acid reflux (tube down asophogus for 24hours not nice) all tests came back ok.

So They think it was his temper?!

Thankfully he doesnt do it anymore

also the change of colour can happen when resting, playing or crying.

i looks worse when hes crying though

You are right to feel brushed off. This is not right. Go to your doctor and demand a third EGC and further test to establish the cause of these symptoms.
I would imagine the skin would change to a bluish colour because of lack of oxygen. This could well be caused by a heart malfunction or something else but it isnt normal and you need to demand they take action!!!

Bluish discolouration is cyanosis, caused by lack of oxygen.
A good haemoglobin makes this to appear earlier than there is any serious oxygen lack in the blood.
If the EKGs have been normal and he has no other problem (like shortness of breath) only that u mentioned, there is no cause for concern. Although another check up will be reassuring.
Good luck!
after add details-
It sounds more like temper-tantrums.
If you like, have a second opinion. Some other doc may like to go for more investigations.
All the best!

Remember the mother's instinct, we always seem to know something's up. Just go bugging doctors and if you are not satisfied go find someone else, we have to be our own advocates. Good luck with your baby

ah poor little thing,i can understand u being out of your mind with worry..as a mother id be exactly the same..if i were u i would keep going back the hosp and demanding a full check up untill they find out whats wrong..some doctors might miss something so i would want a second opinion, its your right.your not happy because no one is tellin u whats the matter with your son,u know your own child and its mothers instinct that tells us our children are not right, try not worry too much, hopefully its nothin too serious, but i would keep goin back untill they get to the bottom of this..i wish u all the best and a very healthy long life to your little darlin.take care..xx

How old is he now. ECG's on babies are very difficult technically, so they may have done the second because the first had too much body motion or artifact. Not all cardiac problems are picked up on ECG's, they only show the electrical activity, not structure, or blood flow. Perhaps your child needs an ultrasound of his heart, or a referral to a cardiologist.

if ECG findings are normal, then there's no problem retlated to his heart, most probably, if thats wat the doctor says... but if ur baby is really color from pink to bluish-pale, its not normal anymore...myt be ur baby is not receiving enough oxygen that would supply his whole body that he turns that color. just try to give him enough rest, ok? be sure that when he's asleep, his pilow on head is not too high nor too low. when ur breast feeding, be sure to observe proper positioning and handling him to prevent aspiration. keep him warm also most of the time so as not to stress him from gasping air (coz coz environment wud cause him to increase oxygen demand)... and mom, if u see that he's really not doin fine, bring him imdiately to the nearest hosp..ok>

and by the way, u can also monitor ur son respiration at home. count his breathing for one full minute. the average normal respiration is 60 if he's less than 5 yrd old. if above that, its not normal anymore. better consult to the clinic imdiately if that occurs. might be pneumonia if that hapens...

take care!

That all sounds very distressing for you.

Funny turns are very common in children, and thankfully most of the time are totally benign. It sounds like he is having what is known as reflex-anoxic seizures in response to screaming or even breath-holding. These are really common and are not a form of epilepsy. They can be very distressing to watch, especially if there is a colour change or even jerking.

Before discharge from hospital, your baby would have had a baby check which would have included a cardiological examination. This would have picked up any major cardiac abnormality (e.g. a murmur). The ECGs which were done would also help to exclude a problem with the electrical conduction of the heart or a tendancy to develop funny rhythms (specifically looking at what is known as the QT interval on the ECG). I think if all these things are normal, then you can feel somewhat reassured.

What is really useful, believe it or not, is if you are able to video one of these attacks and then show it to the paediatrician. It's not always easy to have a camera on hand, but if they are occuring frequently and predictably then it is worthwhile trying.

Like I say, I am sure this will turn out to be a benign problem that he will grow out of but I appreciate that you need further reassurance.

I hope this helps....let us know how you get on.
