Can someone tell me if they know what is ment by being a blue baby when you are born and what causes it?

It used to mean that the baby was born with some kind of heart defect. The blue tinge was because of the lack of oxygen

my brother was born blue because of lack of oxygen. the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. fortunately they got it off of him in time.

Its if a baby is born with certain heart defects.

I think its when the baby is starved of oxygen when being born. Sometimes the umbilican cord gets wraped around the babys neck.

My brother was a 'blue baby' and this was caused by respiratory distress.I found the following info on Wickipedia.

Blue baby syndrome (or simply, blue baby) is a layman's term used to describe newborns with cyanotic conditions, such as

Cyanotic heart defects
Tetralogy of Fallot
Dextro-Transposition of the great arteries
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
Methemoglobinemia
Respiratory distress syndrome

I think if a baby is blue its because they havent received enough oxygen

Blue baby Syndrome is a term used to describe a newborn child with cyanotic conditions.
Most often this bluish colouration of the skin is due to the presence of deoxygenated hemoglobin in blood vessels,
near the skin surface. It occurs when the oxygen saturation of the arterial blood falls below 85%.

It was also a term that was once used to describe a Rhesus baby. A baby born with Antiboides when the mother was O Rhesus Negative blood group. Babies used to have to have a complete blood change soon after birth. This was before the times of screening the mother for this condition in her baby.

Normally Rhesus only effects the second and any subsequent children born to a mother with the antibodies in her blood. Rarely are the first born effected though it has been known.
