Baby with breathing problems?

My sister had a baby girl on 18 Sept, she has been kept in because of breathing problems - now, we've been told she has 'choanal atresia' & she got an operation on her nose 3 days ago, she was doing fine but last night she had to get took back in theatre because she went blue (couldn't catch her breathe), now they have to keep nasal stents up her nose so it heels & keeps her nasal passages open.

I'm just curious because we're all so concerned about her, the doctor says if the stents up her nose don't help her then she'll have to get a tube through her neck.

Anyone with advice with a family member with the same thing? Thanks

Choanal atresia is a birth defect where the nasal passages are blocked. Because babies are not smart enough to breathe through their mouth, they will suffocate if they can't breathe through their nose. It might sound simple to you and I that if you can't breathe through your nose, you should breathe through your mouth. However, with babies things are different. If the nasal passages don't stay open, then it is logical that an artificial airway would have to be placed until the situation is rectified.

In the event that a tracheostomy is placed in the baby, the baby's caregivers will have to learn how to care for the trach in a safe and appropriate manner. Family participation in patient care is critical for the baby to come home. Usually it takes at least two weeks for a new trach to heal well enough to be changed for the first time. I think that the baby would be in the hospital for at least a month to ensure that the ostomy is healed properly, the family is trained, and all the support materials/equipment are available in the home.

When the trach is no longer needed, it would be covered with gauze and let to heal by itself. There might be a mark on the baby's neck for life, depending on how well it heals, what method of trach placement is used, and how large the hole is.

Please remember that if you can't breathe nothing else matters. Choanal atresia is a correctable condition that should resolve with surgery and time. Having a baby with a trach may seem like a large and scary burden now, but will be worth it when you see the baby grow into a healthy, functional adult.

My son had breathing problems as a baby. The big problems is allergys to food and environmental. He was on every formula out there, and couldn`t tolerate any of them.Failure to thrive as a result.Antibiotic use will only cause food allergys and candida. If the baby has been on antibiotics, she needs to have her healthy bacteria replaced with probiotics.I wish i had breastfed my son.I breastfed my daughter and no health problems of any kind.Introducing table foods to early, will only make this problem worse, especially wheat and grains that contain gluten.Check out the book Perscription for Nutritional Healing.Try and find a holistic dr.A child with food allergys, can later be diagnosed with autism, check out the autism research institute and the DAN protocol.1 in every 150 children, will be diagnosed with autism.1 in every 94 boys. There is a gut-brain connection.Food allergys=undigested foods=children with starving brains. There is a book by that name.Get some good nutritional suppliments and put in her bottle.Boswellia is good for inflammation and allergic responses.Decongest Herbal Formula from Zand is a good allergy fighting product.
