Postpartum Depression?

I just had a bay 3months ago. I knew after I had him I got the baby blues. Then it went away. Around 3months postpartum everything changed. One minute im happy the next thing you know im crying like crazy. I dont really enjoy the things i use to enjoy. I have really bad mood swings. Could this possibly be postpartum depression??? If so what can i do because I have no insurance???

I also think you are suffering from Post-Partum depression. It is essential that you dealt with. My heart goes out to you. You need to go to the Partnerships for Prescription Assistance website at https://www.pparx.org/Intro.php

"The Partnership for Prescription Assistance brings together America鈥檚 pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care providers, patient advocacy organizations and community groups to help qualifying patients who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public or private program that鈥檚 right for them. Many will get them free or nearly free. Its mission is to increase awareness of patient assistance programs and boost enrollment of those who are eligible. Through this site, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance offers a single point of access to more than 475 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 180 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. To access the Partnership for Prescription Assistance by phone, you can call toll-free, 1-888-4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669).

In order to find out what patient assistance programs you may qualify for, all you have to do is answer a few short eligibility questions. This site will help supply you with the information you need to get involved in a program and even allow you to download applications online. You can then follow the instructions on the application to apply."

Good luck. Persevere, be persistent, and don't let anyone derail you. You are etitled to receive the help that you (and baby) need.

Good luck, sweetie, and remember

Talk therapy (counselling) alone DOESN'T WORK
Pharmacolgical therapy alone DOES work

The best outcomes occur when both approaches are used in tandem.

I think there is quite a good chance you are suffering from Pnd. The symptoms you are having are similar to the ones I had after I had my first baby 9 years ago, and after my 2nd baby 6 years ago.
Perhaps you could look in the phone directory for services that are free? Surely there has to be something. Maybe phone a depression hotline, and ask if they know of anywhere that can help you. Pnd can be a terrible illness and it's best to get help with it.

I was recently reading that in order for it to be PPD, the onset has to be within the first 4 weeks after birth, but really, it doesn't matter. Depression is depression, post-partum or not.

Anyway, it's often possible to get counseling pretty cheaply, I saw a psychologist who was doing her internship 2 years ago at the community counseling center for $10/hour (this was dependent on your income though, which for me was $0/year). She recommended Feeling Good by David D. Burns. They didn't have that book at the library but they did have The Feeling Good Handbook by the same author and they're really similar, and it was fairly helpful, so I'd recommend buying it (I recently bought Feeling Good for $8).

When it comes to antidepressants, there are tons of generic ones nowadays that your GP is often willing to prescribe, will usually cost you something like $0.50/day, so like $15/month. Not my first choice, but if counseling doesn't work definitely worth a try. The SSRIs and bupropion are fairly safe during breastfeeding, afaik. Obviously, it'd be better to discuss this with a psychiatrist, but I'm guessing that by saying you don't have insurance you meant you don't have money either.

Also, get help from your husband or friends or whomever. PPD is often caused by fatigue of trying to be a supermom. So tell your hubby he can do the dishes for a change.

I really want to recommend getting some insurance though... If something majorly bad happens how are you going to afford it? My husband and I have a $5k deductible and for the two of us it's $105/month, but at least we're covered in case one of us gets cancer or god knows what that might cost $200k (baby will cost $20 a month extra, iirc, btw).

Good luck. :)

There are free or low cost mental health clinics in every city.
Think of your baby and yourself. seek out help.
I went through post partum depression with each of my 3 children. It all happened at about 3 months each time.
Seek counseling now for the health of your baby and yourself.
good luck and be strong
