Why is my nephew so white?

My brother (like myself) is white and Caucasian but his wife is black and yet when our nephew was born he was completely white with blonde hair and blue eyes like the rest of his paternal family. Is that unusual I wonder? I'm just curious to know if anyone else has any experience of this?

I'm pregnant with my first child and (co-incidentally) my partner is not white either. He's from India. I wonder if our baby will be white and blonde like mummy or dark-haired and dark-eyed like daddy?

I was sure that being darker in skin, hair and eyes was a dominant gene?

edit - hit the nail on the head with that one! Yes my sister-in-law does have Caucasian genes, although she has a dark complexion her mother is white and yes my brother is, like myself, blue-eyed blonde.

Now then Paw! No need of preaching young man *winks

We'd be married today if we could. Trouble is for legal reasons we have to marry in India before we can legally marry in England and we just don't have that kind of money yet. I know what you mean tho. I DO feel bad that we aren't married. In my culture it's acceptable but Heaven knows what his parents will say!

Darkness of skin is more complicated then just dominate/non dominate.
In the case of your nephew, his wife was carrying a recessive trait for eye color. B=Brown b=blue.
So let us guess that you brother has blue eyes...
he is a bb while his wife is Bb. so that gives four combinations...
bB,bB,bb,bb half of which give brown eyes (bB &bB) and half blue (bb,bb) So you can conclude that you sister in laws family has some caucasion ancesstors.

As to you and your husband. You must have aleast one non-dominate blue gene, if you brother has blue eyes. You husband will likely have dominate Black or Brown and some other gene. If you look at his parent's eye color and his siblings. If any of them have blue eyes you child can have blue eyes. It is most likely that you child will be darker than you and lighter than you husband

It's all in the genes..really. I am white and my husband is black. Our first two girls are pretty light but not as light as me. One has blondish brown ethnic hair with light brown eyes. The other has brunette, straight hair (like me) with dark brown eyes. My newest baby, 10wks today, has a very light complexion and has redhair just like me! She also still has blue eyes..so they may remain blue or turn green probably. My first two had their eyes change from blue to brown in the first two weeks of life.

Incidently, I went to school with a guy who had black ancestors..even though he would deny it. He looked white. He married a blonde, blue eyed girl...they had a baby and the baby was black. Imagine the wife's surprise. LOL

It is just the mix of genes and at present cannot be determined before birth. Luck of the draw you might say.

It all depends on the genetic selection. Did you hear about the biracial couple that had twins and one was black and the other was white. Also, your nephew could get his darker features later. But it mainly boils down to genetic selections from the DNA pool.

sometimes but not always... i know a guy who is white and his girl is black. well one is black and the other is white but you can sort of see some black in her . the white baby had blue eyes and dark hair like daddy and her skin is white and the other lil girl is black with dark eyes and hair. so i guess it is what ever god wants them to be/

I believe it is a gene issue. Some races of people have stronger genes then others. I bet your baby comes out dark haired and eyed as darker skinned people have very strong genes. I think your Brothers baby is one of a rare few that took the opposing appearence.

I think that your brother's wife may already be of mixed genetics. I have seen this, though, when there wasn't any obvious or provable mixture. However, in your case, I think that you will find that the odds are towards your partner's appearance. Now, I'm going to preach. No, not about race. Who cares except small minded people. I'm going to admonish you to marry your partner and also give your life over to God. You will raise a much better child if both of you will apply Biblical principals to your family life. God bless you. More info at www.mormon.org.

I had hear blue eye and light coled hair were More dominate but if there is any one in the family with red hair or black dark skin it can come out at any time.

I have a friend who is white. Her husband is mulatto and they have a 2 year old son. He is white as can be with brown wavy hair and big brown eyes. I thought he was completely Caucasian! I had no idea!
