RN looking into CRNP and/or Midwife programs?

I am going to be finishing my RN in Dec. 07 and know that I ultimately want to be able to deliver babies. I wanted to go on for CRNP, but am finding that in that position, you are not certified to do deliveries. However, as a Midwife, you generally aren't certified to prescribe medicine. Is there such a thing as a CRNP position that allows for deliveries, medication prescription, and prenatal care? I was thinking that a CRNP in OB/GYN would allow for this, but it is appearing that I may not be correct in that one. Any suggestions?

Side note: I live in PA and currently have my BSE in Elementary Education. I want to go to an RN-MSN program and just take the few courses to skip through the BSN.

if you get the BSN, you can then take courses to become a nurse-midwife.

I'm going through the Midwive's College of Utah (formerly the Utah College of Midwifery) distance education program and I'm currently an apprentice under a local CNM. I'm going to become a CPM (certified practicing midwife) first and then get the nursing degree on top of that.

I think there's actually a midwifery college in PA...I thought I remembered reading about their distance education program. I was impressed but then came across something about having to do a campus visit once or twice. I live in Southern Wyoming, so I opted for the one in UT.

A CPM can deliver babies at home (except in some states), at a hospital, or at a birthing center. They refer women to a doctor if they need a prescription. But they are well versed in natural homeopathic treatments (like primrose oil to encourage labour) and can recommend OTC medication.

Lay midwives deliver babies only at home. They don't have any certification and are illegal in most states.

Good luck! Midwifery is very rewarding.

Hi Although Iam not a midwife, my son was delivered by an excellent one. She is a certified nurse-midwife, and she prescribed for me(I am in Ma., maybe its different)I deleivered in a hospital, she doesn't do home births.

Her name is LouiseRacine-Bastarache and her website is www.warehamnursemidwives.com.-I do believe that she has email on the site.
I had an amazing birth experience, with no medication, no tears or stitches, no intervention.....kudos to you, we need more nurse-midwives!(my local OB's have a 50% C-section rate-VERY SCARY)Best wishes on your pursuit.
PS-my sister in RI had her 4 kids at home with lay midwives, who don't do hospital births, apparently.
