When did they discover Avian influenza H5N1 in human? And how many people died at that time?

First cases were diagnosed three years ago, all who contracted it at that time died.
So far the illness has a death rate of approximately 74%. All that is needed for it to become pandemic is ease of transmission from human to human.

This particular virus has been around a long time. If you wish to read a really great discussion of it, buy "The Great Influenza" The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History, by John M. Barry. It is about the 1918 flu, and is an absolutely awesome study, just how this virus mutates, and how most viruses mutate..... get it used anywhere on the web --- try Amazon.com.... Fascinating--worth every dime.
