Does anybody have experience of Avascular Necrosis of a metatarsal and the treatments offered?

The commonest avascular necrosis of the metatarsal affects the second metatarsal head, causing pain and limited movement of the joint. The pain is localised to the area of the joint, mainly under the so called 'ball' of the foot (before the toes). I think its called Frieberg's disease.

As I recall, most cases resolve over time, but a certain proportion need a surgical procedure to reconstruct the joint, or change the angle of the joint to reduce the contact area of the affected part.

In this joint, AVN is not a sign of anything serious (unlike certain other sites are when affected with AVN), and most cases don't have an obvious cause.
