Does fosamax work in avascular necrosis of the hips?

Does fosamax work in avascular necrosis of the hips?

I would not have guessed this, but apparently bisphosphonates (for example, Fosamax) *are* used to treat avascular necrosis. I don't have any personal experience with this....

There was a study published recently that indicated it *was* effective (see 1st source). A little bit later, some other researchers wrote a letter to the journal criticizing the results of that study (see 2nd source). So I think the final answer for now is that although bisphosphonates are used to treat AVN, there is still debate in the community about whether or not they are effective.

Incidentally, bisphosphonates have also been linked to *causing* AVN in the jaws of cancer patients. Weird....

fosamax is a terrible drug. Bisphosphinates were first used as industrial cleaning solvents to prevent scaling and rusting on equipment. It kills the osteoclasts, which are the bone building cells that break down bad bone. This causes an increase in density, in the short run, but seems to compromise the structural integrity of the bone, such that bone fracture rates may actually increase 3-5 years into therapy.

Poison will never treat weak bones. Eating magnesium rich foods, getting strenous exercise, checking out one's hormone levels (but NEVER use synthetic HRT; bio-identical is the only safe way to go), making sure you are getting silica, and other trace minerals, and most importantly: correct metabolic acidosis. How many foods do we eat that have an acidic reaction? Wheat and Dairy are the primary culprits, but anything processed tends to have this effect. Taking calcium supplements won't do it either. Turns out that those who ingest the most calcium: from pills, or milk, have the highest rate of bone fracture. Look at the Chinese. They don't have a word for osteoporosis, don't drink milk, don't take calcium supplements, and ingest less than 100mg of vegetable calcium daily.

Get off the drugs, and fire your doctors. That may be life-saving advice.
