Dendritic cells (DC) are antigen (usually foreign protein) -presenting cells. They "show" in a special way the protein to your lymphocytes, helping them get tuned up for their fight against the foreign invader. Some of these DCs express certain receptors (FC-gamma) which are important in immune system response through the interferon response genes. These receptors can be inhibitory, in which they turn down the immune system, or stimulating, whereby they turn on the system.

Autoimmune diseases are characterized by loss of control of aspects of the immune system (like a car without brakes). By turning "down" the system, these diseases might be controlled.

Cancer arises at some point due to a failure of our immune systems to recognize the cancer as "not self"; by stimulating the immune system one might hope to re-energize our system such that it could possibly kill cancer cells as it should.

Manipulating the receptor types for these DCs might allow selective therapy for these two disease classes.
