Autism. ..I have been taking a teen for testing all of his life.?

over 14 years and 3x'S that amount of testing at high quality childrens hospital facilities. They have suggested a few syndroms but will not verify. Now in a local testing facility I was told he has autism. I see that he displays many charactistics.
Is this a 'blanket term" right now. Like all the ADD facouple of years back or like tonsils. Did they steer away from suggesting autism because he has some serious issues and autism is not suggestive of them. THIS IS NEW if you have any info or experience please respond. I want to help him and he is almost impossible to test or discipline because he is all over the place...........................Thanks.

autism awareness is at a high, but i think that its a good thing. many kids in the autistic spectrum were slipping through the cracks( possibly as the child you are referrring to has up until now)
why are you questioning the diagnosis? he obviously has alot of problems and without a diagnosis he has probably been not able to get much support through the school and even through medical assistance that could be helping him greatly. many many parents with kids who are labeled PDD -NOS or other general labels just want a difinative diagnosis so they can get some help. once a child has a definitive diagnosis of autism....there is a TON of assistance for him.but advocation is the key, and it must be strong.
autism is a huge spectrum disorder. my advice is to take the diagnosis and run with it to help the child NOW. access all you can for him, and if the diagnosis changes at some point...well thats ok too! at least he will have been getting assistance and the attention he needs .
all the best :)

Talk to someone in an Autism support group and see if they agree with what he's being diagnosed as.
